Been feeling a lot more arty these days, although I've been running out of ideas haha! So I thought I might start doing fan art of my favourite game characters. Today's character, Street Fighter's Cammy! She's so cheeky :p

In recent news regarding Odonata, we have had a bit of a set back resulting in a whole months worth of programming wasted on a silly miscalculation from yours truly. :)

However, things are back on track and we are working as hard as we always are on getting it to a presentable state.

Just thought I'd post an old TF2 item I submitted about 9 months ago, the stats and name were revealed during a steam translation leak about 5-6 months ago. Had a lot of fun with this one, largest/complex item I've done so far. :) Named it based on the anti-missile warship cannon.

Here's some figure studies, not done a little doodle page like this for a long time! :D

Really enjoy drawing wacky dynamic poses ha, no lazy leg amputees this time either! Need to improve my line control a little though, I end up going over my lines too much because I'm so rusty, they just get thicker and thicker the less I draw haha.

Project Odonata is going strong, I'm planning on making some development posts of some of our programming scenes and thesis so you have something to look at, rather than me just telling you about it every other month :p

TF2 - The Deus Ex Update!

Hey everyone! Still going strong on Odonata, Ani and I are healthily nearing a playable prototype. Will have something to post very soon! Including a new development blog and an IndieDB page. :D

I also will be doing some art soon. I admit, I really have dropped off the wagon for that. Programming is a tough job!

A month ago I was approached by Eidos-Montreal to create a set of TF2 promotional items to promote their amazing upcoming title, Deus Ex: Human Revolution! What an honour!

Among the eight items Eidos-Montreal pitched to Valve for the promotion, I was given the choice to create four of them. I decided to choose the following, The Short Circuit, The Diamondback, The Widowmaker and The Deus Specs. You can check 'em out after the jump! Valve then created the rest internally, The Machina, Nanobalaclava, Purity fist and The Company Man.

Like all contributed items in the Mann Co. Store, Valve give a generous 25% of the sales to the creators, so I will receive 25% of the sales from the four Deus Ex items/bundle I created in the Mann Co. Store.

So, if you like my items and Deus Ex for that matter, I would be honoured if you grabbed them in TF2's Mann Co. store! A considerable amount of my earnings from TF2 will be going towards Odonata and getting the game up on its feet and out there!

The Short Circuit

I had pretty much full creative freedom with this one, apart from the fact that it must be an augmented arm of some sort.

The initial provided idea was actually meant to be a full blown minigun arm, at which point Valve indicated that they wanted the idea changed to something less powerful and electrical based. Thus I came up with this! :D

The Diamondback

I was provided with the original concept from Deus Ex for this one, It's a pretty great design! so no real issues with this one apart from the fine text and slightly blobby grip, just removed the small details and modular-fied the design.

The Widowmaker

Similar to the Diamondback, I was provided with the original concept from Deus Ex. Again, it's good solid design, so no real issues for me.

I didn't quite enjoy the idea of gun mount rails in TF2 so that was the first thing I adjusted and shortened the stock due to some clipping problems. I had a bit of a problem with the colour on this one too, took me a few days longer on the texture than usual to get it right, I think the warm tan colour threw me off a bit maybe, hehe.

The Deus Specs

The Purity Fist

I was also initially going to create the Augmented arms for the heavy, however I made the decision to drop them for something that would take a little less time, good thing too, I was working right up to a day before the deadline. Working solid from 9am to 5am during the last week before the deadline.

Valve took over for me and created the augmented arms based on my concept by the looks of it.

Project "Odonata"

After a lot of people asking what I'm working on, I'm starting to feel like we really need something tangible on this game project we've been planning for so long.

So, we are going to call the game project "Odonata" for the time being...

Thankfully, the money I have received from my Team Fortress 2 endeavours have enabled this project to be entirely financially secure, allowing us to focus on actually completing this project haha!

Anyway, the game will be a 3rd person sandbox strategy shooter. There really isn't any solid categories we can put it into so we are just going to have to go with that description. The game will be heavily based on survival and scavenging in the desert.

For the last couple of months, Ani and I have been knuckling down with the programming, so there hasn't been a great deal of concepts being created, so here is some year old concepts! :D

In the next few weeks, I'm going to make it my business to paint a better picture in everyone's mind of the game's appearance, so expect some more stuff soon!

TF2 - The Shogun Update!

Last month I was contracted by Sega to create 8 Japanese-themed promotional items for TF2, for a cross promotion between the game Total War: Shogun 2 and Team Fortress 2.

I busted my ass for a solid month straight, 16 hours a day. I've really never worked so hard in my life!

Like my Tankbuster items in the Mann Co. Store, I will also be receiving 25% of the sales from the Shogun items/bundles in the Mann Co. Store, with all my earnings going towards developing my own game with Ani. So if you feel like supporting us, grab 'em in TF2's in-Game store! :D

My role in this rather buisinessy dealio was to design, model and texture the 8 items from simple descriptions. I was left mostly in the dark in terms of the item names, mechanics and usage.

Also, a conch shell is a surprisingly difficult thing to model, URGH.

More work on the designs. Should hopefully be rolling out some 3d soon, as long i don't get stuck on SC2 haha.

Progress is going well so far, coming up with a decent pathfinding method has been a very tricky but we've managed to figure something out, so were stillllll meating out the main functionality.

Turning a zig-zag path into the fastest possible route has been mind crushing. Involving collecting an array of corners, doing LOS checks going down each side of each corner in the array to eventually produce a cut corner.

Max Mandibles - 2nd Pass

Anyway, Annie and i have been making good progress on Max Mandibles so far!

I thought I might as well share some more information on the game and some technical mechanics.

Max is the protagonist ant, burning with rage after the evil termites slaughtered his ant colony. So, seeking revenge, he dives deep into their colony...

Max Mandibles will be a Rogue-like action puzzler, created in UDK, and will involve eating, placing and hitting blocks to survive and advance through the levels.

Levels will be randomly generated using noise and special grouping methods to produce a new experience every time, while still being conveniently laid out and organised. This will encourage the player "learn to live" rather than learn to memorise the level.

Here are some super alpha stages at the moment, progress on level gen methods (prototype).

Enemies will be smart and deployed en masse but because of our generated environments, any pre-compiled pathfinding methods just won't work. So we've had to implement our own pathfinding method to allow all enemies to be able to navigate to the player regardless of the environment (maze solving).

I think thats enough for now, i think we'll make a new blog for Max Mandibles with deeper explanation of the things i've mentioned here.

TF2 Polycount Contest.

Hey guys, Haven't posted in a while! :(

Here's the work i did for the Official TF2 Polycount Contest, The contest spanned from May 24th to June 28th. The rules were to design and create a minimum of 3 Items for a class, retaining function of the weapons and in-keeping with the overall style of TF2.

I started late and unfortunately i changed my idea just before the deadline so i did the whole pack from scratch in 10 days, it was quite an intense expierience! D:

I was also lucky enough to be one of the 5 winners of the contest! :D So i'll be getting a box of signed Valve swag and my 5 Items with stats added to the game officially. (Hopefully soon!)
